Hyundai Steel has announced that it has received the ‘Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA)’ certification from the Australian Steel Institute (ASI).
The ASI began implementing the SSA certification system in January 2023, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 and the sustainable development of the steel industry. The certification evaluates the environmental impact of steel manufacturing and sales processes, awarding companies that demonstrate environmentally friendly and sustainable steel production and distribution.
Hyundai Steel became the first Korean steel company to obtain SSA certification across all its operations, including the Dangjin Steelworks, Incheon Plant, Pohang Plant, and Suncheon Plant.
This certification marks a significant achievement that enhances Hyundai Steel’s competitiveness in Australia’s eco-friendly building market. Australia operates the ‘Green Star’ certification for environmentally sustainable buildings, and using SSA-certified steel products can provide additional points in Green Star evaluations.
To qualify for SSA certification, companies must meet rigorous requirements such as submitting documentation based on international standards like ISO 14067 or EN 15804, establishing and implementing a carbon neutrality roadmap, and developing supply chain ESG policies and ethical norms.
Hyundai Steel has been operating an environmental management system based on ISO 14001 and has actively pursued sustainability, including announcing and executing a carbon neutrality roadmap in 2023. It has also received high praise for its eco-friendly materials and documentation associated with its products, enabling it to secure SSA certification.
With this certification, Hyundai Steel plans to actively respond to the demands of Australian customers and strengthen its sales in the local market.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Steel was recognized as the ‘2025 Sustainability Champion’ and the top member at the recent annual meeting of the World Steel Association in April, acknowledging its ongoing efforts to enhance its global sustainability competitiveness.
