Hanwha Ocean has held a naming ceremony for its next-generation drillship, officially marking its entry into the deep-sea drilling business.
The ceremony was attended by Philippe Levy, President of Hanwha Ocean’s Marine Division; Renata Baruzzi, Director of Engineering, Technology, and Innovation at Petrobras; Rodrigo Ribeiro, representative of Constellation; Clayton Coan, representative of Hanwha Drilling; and other key stakeholders. Renata Baruzzi served as the sponsor of the ceremony and named the drillship “Tidal Action.”
This drillship features a design developed in-house by Hanwha Ocean and is capable of drilling up to 12 kilometers at a maximum water depth of 3.6 kilometers. It is equipped with a dynamic positioning system for stable hull positioning and an explosion containment safety device to ensure safe drilling operations, thereby meeting both operational efficiency and safety requirements.
In February of last year, Hanwha Ocean established Hanwha Drilling to manage its drillship operations and made a strategic decision to self-operate its drillships. The delivery of the "Tidal Action" marks a significant milestone in Hanwha Ocean's entry into the marine drilling sector.
As Hanwha Ocean seeks to transform into a provider of integrated EPCIO (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Operation) solutions in the marine sector, the delivery of this drillship is expected to significantly contribute to securing a new revenue base related to operations.
Well-known for its eco-friendly and high-efficiency drillship construction technology, Hanwha Ocean aims to build a track record that enables it to lead the market while expanding the drillship value chain and providing marine energy solutions based on offshore platforms.
Last year, Hanwha Drilling formed a partnership with Constellation, a leading marine drilling company in Brazil. Constellation plans to operate long-term charter contracts with Brazil's state-owned oil company Petrobras through Hanwha Drilling’s drillships, starting deep-sea drilling operations in Brazil in the second half of this year.
“Delivering a drillship of world-class standards and officially entering the marine drilling business is a significant achievement," said Philippe Levy, President of Hanwha Ocean’s Marine Division. "With our technological competitiveness and strategic vision, we aim to grow into a leading company in the marine energy market.”
