Doosan Enerbility announced on July 23 that its self-developed 10-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine model, ‘DS205-10MW,’ has received Type Certification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading global certification agency. This marks the first time a Korean company has obtained international Type Certification for a 10MW-class offshore wind turbine.

The certification was granted after Doosan Enerbility upgraded its 8MW model developed in 2022. The company began demonstration testing in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, in February of this year, completed the testing in April, and subsequently verified the design and performance data according to international standards to secure final certification.

The ‘DS205-10MW’ boasts a blade diameter of 205 meters and an overall height of approximately 230 meters, roughly equivalent to an 80-story building. It was designed to achieve an annual utilization rate of over 30% even in low wind speed conditions of around 6.5 m/s. *Utilization rate: The ratio of actual annual power generation to the maximum theoretical capacity.

Since entering the offshore wind sector in 2005, Doosan Enerbility has established a strong presence in South Korea’s offshore wind market through major projects such as Tamra offshore wind (30MW), Southwest Jeju offshore wind (60MW), and the upcoming Hallim offshore wind project (100MW). The company has also increased its local component sourcing rate from approximately 30% initially to over 70%, significantly contributing to the development of Korea’s offshore wind industry.

Son Seung-woo, Vice President of Power Service Business Group at Doosan Enerbility, said, “This achievement was made possible through collaboration with over 150 domestic suppliers and demonstrates the competitiveness of Korean wind power technology aligned with the government’s renewable energy expansion policies. We will further activate our domestic supply chain and aggressively expand into global markets.”

Meanwhile, in the 11th Basic Power Supply and Demand Plan, the Korean government aims to expand wind power capacity to 40.7GW by 2038. Currently, the country’s cumulative wind power capacity is approximately 2.3GW, indicating a rapid growth potential for the offshore wind market. To support this, the government is also pushing for the enactment of the Offshore Wind Power Special Act, acceleration of energy transition policies, and the construction of an ‘Energy Highway.’
