Muara Enim, July 3, 2025 — PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) has marked a significant milestone in Indonesia’s renewable energy landscape with the full operational readiness of Lumut Balai Unit 2, a 55-megawatt (MW) geothermal power facility. The plant achieved operational status after a rigorous 72-hour continuous Unit Rated Capacity (URC) test concluded successfully on June 29, 2025, and following the issuance of the official Commissioning Certificate (SLO). This development propels PGE’s total installed capacity to 727.5 MW across six operational regions, reaffirming its vital role in Indonesia’s clean energy push.

The URC test, conducted from June 26 to 29, verified the plant’s stable performance and strict adherence to technical standards, allowing the plant to be synchronized with the national electricity grid seamlessly. The milestone not only signifies technical achievement but also signals a crucial step toward expanding Indonesia’s renewable energy portfolio, particularly by harnessing geothermal resources. Furthermore, the operational launch opens new avenues for PGE’s revenue, chiefly through power sales to state-owned electricity company PLN.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy’s President Director, Julfi Hadi, highlighted the collaborative effort that made this possible. “We are proud that Lumut Balai Unit 2 is now delivering reliable, full-capacity power. This accomplishment underscores our commitment to sustainable, clean energy and brings us closer to our target of reaching 1 GW of independently managed geothermal capacity within the next two to three years,” he stated.

Julfi emphasized that this achievement aligns with nationwide goals to increase renewable energy generation by up to 76% in the 2025–2034 period. “Looking forward, we remain confident in supporting Indonesia’s ambitious expansion of geothermal capacity, which aims to reach 5.2 GW within the same timeframe,” he added.

Beyond Lumut Balai, PGE is actively developing additional strategic projects. These include the Hululais Geothermal Power Plant Units 1 and 2 (110 MW) and co-generation projects with a combined capacity of 230 MW. On June 26, the company also inaugurated the exploration phase of the Gunung Tiga geothermal project in Lampung, which holds an estimated capacity of 55 MW, further underscoring PGE’s continued push to grow Indonesia’s renewable energy landscape.
