LS Cable & System announced on July 16 that it has completed a new manufacturing building (Building 5) at its submarine cable plant in Donghae, Gangwon Province, significantly expanding its capacity for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cables by more than four times.
With this expansion, LS Cable & System now possesses Asia’s largest HVDC cable manufacturing facility, strengthening its competitiveness in securing large-scale projects in the global market.
In particular, this move coincides with the decision by its affiliate, LS Marine Solution, to commission a new dedicated installation vessel for HVDC cables. Together, these developments enable LS Cable & System to offer an integrated turnkey solution, covering everything from production to construction.
The newly added Building 5 features advanced core equipment, including the Vertical Continuous Vulcanization (VCV) system. VCV is an essential device for manufacturing long-distance high-voltage cables spanning hundreds of kilometers, ensuring superior insulation quality and electrical stability. This investment greatly enhances both product competitiveness and supply reliability.
The HVDC cable market is experiencing rapid growth, driven by the expanding offshore wind power sector and the increasing demand for long-distance power transmission. However, producing these high-tech cables requires specialized large-scale infrastructure, limiting market participants mainly to a few European and Japanese companies, including LS Cable & System.
Long-distance subsea transmission projects typically require large installation vessels capable of handling over 10,000 tons, and only companies with integrated production and construction capabilities can undertake such major global projects.
A LS Cable & System official stated, “The global HVDC cable market is projected to reach approximately 40 trillion won by 2030. We plan to leverage this facility expansion to actively participate in the government’s ongoing ‘Seohae Energy Highway HVDC Project,’ in collaboration with our affiliate, LS Marine Solution.”
