LS Cable has announced the installation of a 3,000 kW solar power generation system at its submarine cable factory located in Donghae, Gangwon Province, which commenced full operations on April 7.
The introduction of this facility aims to reduce energy costs and strengthen its eco-friendly production base to enhance global competitiveness in securing orders.
The solar power system is expected to generate approximately 3,600 MWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of about 1,200 households. Over a 20-year period, this initiative is projected to result in cost savings of over 7 billion won in electricity expenses.
As global clients increasingly require the use of renewable energy as part of their bidding conditions, this investment carries significant market implications. Notably, major European renewable energy firms such as Ørsted and Germany's transmission system operator TenneT are actively pursuing decarbonization of their supply chains.
Aside from the solar installation, LS Cable is also advancing its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management framework. In December of last year, it became the first company in the domestic cable industry to receive official approval from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its carbon neutrality commitment, and it has established a long-term roadmap targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
“The implementation of this solar power system is highly significant as it helps our Donghae facility achieve its goal of transitioning to 100% renewable energy," said an official from LS Cable. "In the future, we plan to expand the adoption of renewable energy at our domestic and international sites to establish a low-carbon supply chain that meets RE100 and SBTi standards as well as customer demands.”
