Samsung C&T’s Construction Division has announced that it has developed a new technology that is set to revolutionize the remodeling market, specifically targeting the vertical extension and renovation of apartment buildings. The company recently revealed that it has received certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for its groundbreaking technology, the “Automatic Control-Type Post-Tension Method,” which is the first of its kind domestically.
The post-tension method involves installing auxiliary piles in addition to existing foundation piles and applying pressure to strengthen the building’s base. Until now, manual control systems made it difficult to apply pressurization to the entire structure simultaneously — a significant challenge in high-rise extension projects. Precise assessment of the load transfer between existing piles and reinforcement piles has been a critical structural concern.
To address this issue, Samsung C&T collaborated with Korea Infrastructure & Environment Co., Ltd. (KORIE) to develop an “Automatic Pile Control Technology.” Last year, the technology was certified by the Korean Society of Geotechnical Engineers and has now officially received construction new technology certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, reaffirming its originality and excellence.
The core of this technology lies in utilizing an automatic control device to evenly distribute the load applied to each pile, enabling real-time management of all reinforcement piles. It also allows for continuous monitoring of the control process, providing quantitative data on the forces transmitted to the structure.
Applying this technology in high-rise extension and remodeling projects is expected to secure superior quality, improve construction efficiency, boost reliability, and significantly shorten safety review periods, thereby enabling faster project execution.
Professor Lee Jong-seop of Korea Society of Geotechnical Engineers, who oversaw the technical validation, commented, “This automatic control-type post-tension method improves the entire pile management system and raises reliability, making it a core technology for solving the challenges inherent in high-rise remodeling projects.”
In response, Ban Suk, head of Samsung C&T’s remodeling team, stated, “As the demand for urban regeneration through remodeling continues to increase, we will keep securing foundational technologies that ensure safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness, leading the market with innovative solutions.”
