LG CNS has secured a deal to build an AI data center in Jakarta, Indonesia, marking the first time a Korean company has embarked on such a project overseas. The hyper-scale AI data center, valued at about 100 billion KRW, is set to be completed by the end of 2026.
Through a joint venture named 'LG Sinar Mas Technology Solution' with the Sinar Mas Group, Indonesia’s third-largest conglomerate, LG CNS signed a contract with KMG (Kuningan Mas Gemilang) to undertake this project.
The AI data center will be an 11-story building with a total floor area of 46,281 square meters and a power capacity of 30MW, capable of housing over 100,000 servers simultaneously. After the initial phase, KMG plans to expand the total capacity to 220MW, making it the largest data center in Indonesia.
KMG, a joint venture with Sinar Mas Group and Korea Investment & Securities, has been spearheading the AI data center development. Viewing data centers and cloud services as future growth engines, Sinar Mas opted for LG CNS, a leader in Korea’s data center and cloud business. Following the successful consultation and design contract with KMG last year, LG CNS will take charge of infrastructure projects, including cooling systems, power, and communication, totaling around 100 billion KRW.
One LG Strategy: Deploying Integrated Group Capabilities with Cutting-edge Infrastructure
LG CNS will implement the 'One LG' integrated solution, mobilizing the group's core competencies in data center design, construction, and operation (DBO). This includes LG Electronics' data center cooling technology and LG Energy Solution's battery solutions. The plan also involves customized design and engineering to meet the rising AI computing demand in Indonesia and across Asia.
AI data centers operate with massive amounts of data and high-performance GPUs, generating significant heat. To address this, LG CNS will incorporate a hybrid cooling system, blending traditional air cooling with liquid cooling technology to provide an optimized cooling environment for the AI data center.
The power system will support high-density racks of up to 130kW, 24 times the ordinary data center rack's power requirement, ensuring stable power supply for AI data centers fitting many GPUs in a single rack. Moreover, infrastructure redundancy will enable uninterrupted 24/7 operation by switching to backup power in case of primary power supply failure.
The data center will incorporate an eco-friendly HVAC system, automatically controlling temperature and humidity to maximize energy efficiency, complete with top-tier seismic designs for enhanced safety. A piloti structure on the lobby floor will prevent potential flooding.
The facility will also support a neutral environment for network services, allowing tenants to select or set up multiple communication lines to enhance service continuity. Strategically located in Jakarta’s Menteng area, it provides easy access to national network and submarine cable networks, positioning it as a future network hub.
Celebrating 30 years of Excellence in Data Center Design, Build, and Operation
Celebrating three decades of excellence, LG CNS has designed, built, and operated a myriad of data centers at home and abroad. Operating nine data centers in Korea, both proprietary and entrusted, they are recognized as the country’s premier data center operators.
Domestically and internationally, LG CNS's expertise has been acknowledged. Their data centers, both owned and managed, have been awarded the 'Disaster Recovery Champion' certification by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, with the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy bestowing them honors consecutively in 2023 and 2024. Additionally, they achieved ISO certifications for business continuity and energy management.
CEO Hyun Shin-Kyun of LG CNS stated, “We aim to innovate customer value by concentrating LG CNS's data center capacities to construct state-of-the-art AI data centers. Capitalizing on this project, we will expand AI data center operations throughout Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.”
