Coreline Soft's AI-based lung cancer screening solution, AVIEW LCS, demonstrated significant potential for using AI as a primary reading tool when its research paper on first-reading performance was published in the European Journal of Cancer on December 28.

Feasibility of AI as first reader in the 4-IN-THE-LUNG-RUN lung cancer screening trial: impact on negative-misclassifications and clinical referral rate

This paper utilized data from the European lung cancer screening project, 4ITLR (4-IN-THE-LUNG-RUN), and was conducted in collaboration with the iDNA team. According to the research results, AVIEW LCS showed a much lower likelihood of misidentifying nodules larger than 100 mm³ compared to human radiologists, reinforcing the foundation for AI technology to serve as a first reader during lung cancer screening processes.

The paper goes beyond simply proving the accuracy of AI technology, suggesting that AI can establish itself as a primary reading tool. Currently, in the lung cancer screening process, AI for lung nodule detection is authorized for use as a secondary reading tool to assist human radiologists in reviewing detected results. If AI is utilized as a primary reading tool, it can filter lung CT images first, significantly reducing the workload for medical personnel and maximizing the efficiency of screenings.

AVIEW LCS is currently being adopted in various countries' lung cancer screening pilot programs, including major European nations such as Germany, France, and Italy, in addition to South Korea. Notably, following the pilot program's completion, Germany designated AI-based screening as a national essential recommendation, thus redefining the standard for lung cancer screening. In this context, Coreline Soft conducted an AI lung cancer screening webinar for medical personnel in Germany last October, gaining attention.

Recently, Europe has rapidly established a new medical paradigm by adopting AI technology as an essential component of lung cancer screening. Additionally, key countries globally, including those in Europe, are exploring new approaches for early detection of lung cancer, considering expanding screening targets to high-risk groups with a history of secondhand smoke and family history gradually. The acceleration of AI adoption in lung cancer approaches and screening is predicted to strengthen Coreline Soft's leading position in global lung cancer screening.

Meanwhile, last month at the Asian Cancer Screening Conference, Coreline Soft and AVIEW LCS were presented as the world's first AI and cloud-based lung cancer screening case. Utilizing AI and the cloud, this Korean national lung cancer screening case effectively reduced reading discrepancies among medical personnel and increased screening accuracy, proving its applicability in large-scale population-based screening programs.

With the acceleration of AI adoption in lung cancer approaches and screening, it is anticipated that Coreline Soft's leading position in global lung cancer screening will continue to strengthen.
