SK Innovation E&S has announced the commencement of a joint study with Indonesia to explore cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. This collaboration aims to develop innovative infrastructure for transporting and storing CO₂ emissions between Korea and Indonesia.
On June 13, SK E&S held a signing ceremony at the Ferment Ambassador Hotel in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, to mark the occasion of signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SKK Migas, Indonesia’s special agency overseeing oil and gas operations. The event took place publicly on June 17.
Through this agreement, both parties will jointly examine the feasibility of a transboundary CCS project involving the transportation of CO₂ produced in Korea to Indonesia for storage. The research will include analyzing existing international CCS cases, reviewing the success factors in Europe, and investigating relevant international laws and domestic regulations in both countries. These efforts aim to establish a solid foundation for comprehensive bilateral agreements and evaluate future project development prospects.
Currently, SK E&S and SKK Migas are forming a joint working group and operational committee to formalize their cooperation and accelerate the progress of the CCS initiative.
CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions and depositing them into depleted oil and gas fields or deep saline aquifers for long-term sequestration. It is widely regarded as a key technological solution for achieving global carbon neutrality.
Luki Agusjianoto, Secretary-General of SKK Migas, stated, “This cooperation will provide meaningful insights for both countries and contribute to Indonesia’s emergence as a hub for CCS in the Asia-Pacific region.”
Kim Il-young, Head of Upstream Development and Operations at SK E&S, emphasized, “Cross-border CCS is a core component of global carbon reduction strategies. Through strategic collaboration with Indonesia, we aim to strengthen our CCS capabilities and contribute to our goal of achieving carbon neutrality.”
