On March 25, LG Display announced that all its OLED panels, including those for TVs and monitors, have received the ‘Eyesafe 3.0’ certification.

‘Eyesafe 3.0’ is a certification program developed by Eyesafe, a U.S.-based institution specializing in eye safety, and validated by UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science.

To obtain this certification, a display must meet specific criteria: the color gamut must exceed 90% of the DCI-P3 standard, and both the Circadian Protection Factor (CPF), which quantifies the impact of blue light on the viewer’s biological rhythm, and the Radiance Protection Factor (RPF), which measures the proportion of harmful blue light emitted by the display, must be at least 35.

While previous Eyesafe certifications were based solely on the RPF, ‘Eyesafe 3.0’ introduces the CPF, which analyzes the secretion of the sleep hormone melatonin, thereby establishing a more comprehensive standard for human-friendly displays.

According to the certification results, all OLED TV and monitor panels produced by LG Display recorded a CPF of 60 and an RPF of 40, indicating minimal impact on human health. This level is comparable to that of screen protectors used on monitors and smartphones.

Todd Denison, Senior Vice President of Global Regions at UL Solutions, emphasized the importance of objectively and scientifically validated displays for consumers concerned about the potential health effects of blue light, especially as viewing times increase.

In a joint clinical study conducted last year with a research team from Kookmin University, LG Display found that melatonin levels decreased by 2.7% during evening viewing of mini LED TVs, while those watching OLED TVs experienced an 8.1% increase.

Additionally, LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels are recognized for reducing harmful blue light and eliminating flickering issues, earning certifications from leading global organizations for being Flicker Free and Reflection Free, thus enhancing user experience.

“This certification represents an objective and credible validation that sets a new standard for customers choosing human-friendly displays," said Yoon Soo-young, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Vice President at LG Display. "LG Display will continue to provide differentiated customer value through ongoing challenges and innovations.”
