LG Innotek announced on May 12th that it has signed a collaboration agreement with the renowned robotics leader, Boston Dynamics, to jointly develop components for robotic vision systems. The alliance aims to create an innovative ‘Vision Sensing System’ that will enable robots to better perceive their surroundings.
Under the partnership, LG Innotek will engineer a ‘vision sensing module’ intended for integration into Boston Dynamics’ next-generation humanoid robot, Atlas. Meanwhile, Boston Dynamics will focus on developing software that analyzes and processes visual data collected by the module.
This ‘Vision Sensing System’ consolidates various optical sensors, including RGB cameras and 3D sensing devices, into a single compact module. Its design ensures that robots can operate effectively even in low-light or adverse weather conditions, thanks to seamless sensor integration that provides comprehensive visual information.
Leveraging its extensive optical technology expertise gained from smartphones and autonomous vehicles, LG Innotek aims to strengthen its position in robotic sensing technology. The company previously showcased a ‘Sensor Pod’ at CES 2024, exemplifying its capabilities and potential applications in autonomous driving.
Looking ahead, the two firms plan to expand their collaboration, applying joint technological innovations across different aspects of robotic perception. Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Flitter expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting its potential to advance robots’ ability to interpret and understand their environment similarly to humans.
LG Innotek CEO Moon Hyuk-su also emphasized that this strategic cooperation will bolster their competitive edge in the robotics component market and support ongoing technological advancements to deliver unique value to customers, thereby cementing their leadership in the sector.
Beyond smartphones and consumer electronics, LG Innotek continues to diversify into semiconductors, mobility, and robotics, focusing on strengthening its core technology portfolio.
