Lung cancer ranks as the leading cancer in terms of incidence and mortality globally, including in Korea. It is often detected in its later stages—third and fourth—when it has spread significantly.

According to data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the American Cancer Society (ACS), approximately 2.5 million new lung cancer cases were reported worldwide in 2022. Lung cancer made up more than 12% of all new cancer cases, and 1.8 million deaths, accounting for 18.7% of all cancer fatalities.

Consequently, worldwide lung cancer screening programs are being actively implemented, with AI solutions playing a crucial role. On July 1, the German government released new regulations for its national lung cancer screening initiative, mandating the use of AI for interpreting medical images. For low-dose chest computed tomography (LDCT) scans, which detect diseases such as lung nodules, an AI program conducts the initial reading. A radiologist then confirms and supplements the findings to complete the diagnosis.

Before launching this program, Germany conducted a pilot study, the HANSE Study, to validate the reliability and effectiveness of AI in medical image reading.

“The HANSE project demonstrated that AI solutions significantly enhance the efficiency of reading medical images for lung cancer diagnosis,” said Jens Vogel-Claussen, a professor at the University of Hannover, Germany, who attended the Fleischner Society conference in Seoul on July 24. “AI tools can rapidly identify symptoms like lung nodules and notify doctors, which improves diagnostic accuracy and augments the value of medical professionals’ work.”

CorelineSoft stated that it is expanding its lung cancer screening B2G business by securing the German Lung Cancer Screening Project (HANSE) led by Professor Clausen, the Lung Cancer Screening Project (4ITLR) involving five European nations, and the Italian Lung Cancer Screening Project (ILSP).

Additionally, the company plans to increase the distribution of its AI solutions in the European market. While national lung cancer screening projects have been implemented in select countries, such as the United States, South Korea, and Taiwan, they have recently been introduced and advanced in countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, and Slovakia.

“With the global lung cancer screening market rapidly growing, we are engaging in various collaborations with leaders and organizations in the B2G sector, leveraging our expertise and solutions,” said Jin-guk Kim, CEO of CorelineSoft.
