Hyundai Motor Group has reaffirmed its status as a global leader in automotive safety, excelling in crash tests conducted by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
On June 16, Hyundai Motor Group announced that three models—Hyundai's Elantra (known as Avante in Korea) and Sonata, along with Kia's K4—have received the highest rating of 'Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+)' in the IIHS’s 2024 safety evaluations.
With this achievement, Hyundai Motor Group has a total of 15 vehicles that received the TSP+ or TSP ratings this year, the most among global automotive groups. The breakdown includes seven Hyundai models, five Genesis models, and three Kia models, surpassing competitors like Mazda, with eight vehicles, and Honda, with seven.
Earlier in March, several Hyundai models, including the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe, along with Genesis models GV60, GV70 (including its electric version), GV80, and Kia’s EV9 and Telluride, also received TSP+ ratings. The Genesis G90 earned a TSP rating.
This year's evaluation holds even greater significance as the IIHS has significantly tightened its criteria for 2024, particularly emphasizing rear seat safety. The new frontal crash tests now include dummies representing a small woman or a 12-year-old child in the rear seat to more precisely assess injury risk in actual accidents. Achieving a TSP+ rating requires that rear seat protection is rated as 'good.'
Moreover, to secure a TSP+ or TSP rating, vehicles must achieve top ratings in frontal and side crash evaluations, all trims must meet specific headlight performance standards, and pedestrian collision prevention systems must meet set thresholds for both day and night conditions, underlining comprehensive safety performance.
Hyundai Motor Group's commitment to meeting these stringent standards has led to a record of the most TSP or higher ratings for the second consecutive year. Last year, 22 vehicles from Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia achieved TSP or higher ratings, with nine Hyundai, eight Genesis, and five Kia models receiving such accolades.
