S-OIL announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bumhan Unisolution, a leading manufacturer of energy storage system (ESS), EV battery modules, and packs, to strengthen collaboration in the development of immersion cooling systems. The signing ceremony took place on June 13 at S-OIL’s headquarters in Gongdeok-dong, Seoul, attended by executives from both companies.
The partnership follows Bumhan Unisolution’s successful development of a direct-contact immersion cooling ESS system utilizing S-OIL’s proprietary ‘S-OIL e-Cooling Solution’ coolant. Having obtained KC certification and battery thermal runaway test certification (NFPC 607), the company is preparing to commercialize its product. The MoU aims to formalize the joint effort to expand the immersion cooling ESS market as well as the EV battery pack sector.
Furthermore, Bumhan Unisolution has expanded its immersion cooling technology and developed Korea’s first circulating immersion-cooled EV battery pack, which is now being tested in Buhan Motor’s electric buses.
Through the MoU, both companies plan to continue joint development projects involving immersion cooling technology across various applications, including ESS systems, EV batteries, and electric propulsion ships. They also intend to provide mutual technical support and foster product commercialization through close cooperation.
Immersion cooling is regarded as a next-generation thermal management method that enhances heat control efficiency while ensuring fire safety. It is increasingly recognized as an optimal solution for high-energy-density systems.
A S-OIL official stated, “Our collaboration with Bumhan Unisolution demonstrates the potential for expanding immersion cooling technology. Moving forward, we will leverage ‘S-OIL e-Cooling Solution’ to strengthen our competitiveness in heat management solutions for data centers, ESS, EV batteries, and other sectors.”
Bumhan Unisolution also commented, “The development of our immersion-cooled ESS represents a successful case of commercializing next-generation technology that ensures safety and efficiency. We will continue to use our technological strengths to lead the market.”
