Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) announced on June 26 that it hosted a visit from the Commander of the Polish Air Force and his delegation, who toured the company’s headquarters and production facilities for the FA-50PL fighter jet. During the visit, the Polish officials also experienced a test flight of the Korea-based KF-21, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral military cooperation.
The visit was part of a strategic partnership plan between the two air forces. The Polish delegation inspected the FA-50PL production site, which features advanced systems such as electronic radars, the latest air-to-air missiles, and targeting pods.
Furthermore, the Polish Air Force commander took a test flight aboard the KF-21, Korea’s next-generation fighter jet, which is scheduled to be operationally deployed with the Korean Air Force in the second half of next year. The KF-21 combines stealth design features and is evolving into a sixth-generation fighter with manned and unmanned capabilities.
The KF-21 is expected to serve as a core fighter for the Korean Air Force alongside the F-35. Its domestic-made radar and targeting system, along with European-supplied air-to-air weapons, enable high-altitude, high-performance flight missions. The aircraft’s advanced capabilities are anticipated to allow the KF-21 and F-35 to perform complementary missions.
Through test flights and site visits for prospective customers, KAI aims to shift the perception of the KF-21 from a developmental platform to an operational combat platform for export.
KAI is actively participating in Poland’s next-generation fighter acquisition project and is intensifying marketing efforts to expand its presence in the European market.
Poland is considering the purchase of an additional 32 fighters to replace aging aircraft and enhance its combat readiness. Based on its cooperation through the FA-50 program, KAI is also pushing to export the KF-21.
Supported by government and military backing, including the Korean government and the Air Force, KAI has established “Team KF-21” to explore export opportunities not only in Europe but also in the Middle East and Asia.
Since exporting 48 FA-50 fighters to Poland in 2022, KAI has laid a foothold in the European market. The company delivered the initial batch of 12 FA-50GF fighters within 15 months of signing the contract, showcasing its ability to meet tight deadlines. The remaining 36 FA-50PL fighters, customized to Poland’s specifications, are currently progressing through development stages.
