Vancouver, BC – On January 16, in a significant move to address North America's mounting data center space shortage, the Spencer Building Carrier Hotel, located in the prominent Harbour Centre Complex, announced the development of two new state-of-the-art data halls. Set to occupy the sixth floor of the historic Spencer Building; this expansion aims to meet the escalating demand for robust data center services amidst rising operational costs and limited availability in the market.
The expansion introduces a total of 5 MW of additional power capacity and 23,000 square feet of flexible, contiguous colocation space. This new capacity complements the existing 3 MW utilized by the current data center operations in Harbour Centre, reinforcing the facility’s standing as a critical resource within Vancouver’s thriving digital landscape. The strategic downtown location positions the Spencer Building Carrier Hotel as a key player in Western Canada’s connectivity ecosystem.
With North American data center space increasingly constrained and prices soaring, businesses are challenged to secure reliable and affordable data solutions. The launch of these new data halls promises to alleviate some of these pressures, providing high-density, secure colocation spaces directly connected to the facility’s established infrastructure, including the Meet-Me-Room 5 (MMR5) and additional Meet-Me-Rooms throughout Harbour Centre. This expansion not only provides a substantial boost to local capacity but also positions Vancouver as a premier destination for enterprises struggling in the competitive landscape of Tier 1 and Tier 2 markets across North America.
The rollout of this development will occur in two distinct phases:
Phase 1 – Data Hall 1: Available immediately, this hall delivers 2.5 MW of power designed with customizable configurations to suit diverse client requirements. It offers scalable power options of up to 40 kW per cabinet, allowing for concurrent buildout to meet immediate needs.
Phase 2 – Data Hall 2: Planned for launch in 2027, this second hall will introduce an additional 2.5 MW of capacity, further elevating the Spencer Building's infrastructure and reinforcing its commitment to supporting Vancouver’s fast-growing digital economy.
Scott Depot, Director of Business Development and Sales at Spencer Building Carrier Hotel, stated, “Businesses today, whether they are global corporations, cloud providers, AI developers, or telecommunications carriers, face the dual challenge of managing escalating data demands while contending with rising costs for data center services. We are excited to deliver new, customizable data center solutions within the Spencer Building that will empower companies to scale efficiently in Vancouver and connect seamlessly with customers and partners across Canada, the U.S., and the APAC regions. This expansion redefines the landscape for establishing a footprint in Vancouver.”
With these new offerings, the Spencer Building Carrier Hotel is poised to become a linchpin for organizations seeking high-quality data center solutions in an increasingly competitive environment.
