Hyosung Heavy Industries announced on July 16 that it has developed a groundbreaking technology to significantly enhance the durability of concrete by effectively preventing corrosion of internal reinforcement bars. This new ‘Concrete Durability Enhancement Technology’ combines high alkalinity reinforcement inside the concrete with external protective coatings, forming a dual-layer composite system.
The technology increases the concrete’s alkalinity to boost resistance against carbonation, a process where carbon dioxide from the air penetrates concrete and causes steel reinforcement to corrode. Additionally, the system employs external coatings that prevent moisture and carbon dioxide from infiltrating, further protecting the concrete.
Notably, the coating material boasts a tensile rate more than ten times higher than conventional water-based paints, enabling it to effectively seal microcracks on exteriors. Its salt-resistance performance is also 2 to 3 times better than standard products, making it highly suitable for coastal environments with high salinity. This significantly improves the durability and lifespan of buildings.
Since 2023, Hyosung Heavy Industries has been jointly researching internal reinforcement strengthening technology through industry-academic partnerships with Cheongju University and Dongnam Corporation. The company also collaborated with global coatings firm KCC to develop external coating technology, culminating in the completion of the ‘Concrete Durability Enhancement System.’ The technology received certification from the Korea Concrete Society last June.
This innovative system will be first applied at Gwangju Gyeongan’s ‘Harrington Square River Park’ construction site, with plans to extend to key construction projects nationwide. Based on real-world application data, Hyosung Heavy Industries also aims to establish a dedicated quality control process to ensure high product standards.
A company representative stated, “This technology provides a converged solution to ensure long-term durability of structures,” adding, “It will further strengthen the reliability of our premium residential brands such as Harrington Place.”
Hyosung Heavy Industries has been supplying apartments, mixed-use complexes, and luxury villas across Korea under various brands including Harrington Place, Harrington Square, and Harrington Court. The company emphasizes eco-friendly materials and smart home systems to create comfortable and safe living environments, earning prestigious awards such as the Consumer Brand Award for seven consecutive years. Particularly, Harrington Place has won the ‘2025 Customer Love Brand Award’ in the apartment category for four straight years.
