Hyundai Steel has become the first South Korean steel company to acquire international certification for the quality of nuclear material, marking a significant step in its strategy to penetrate the global nuclear steel market.
On April 16, Hyundai Steel announced that it received the "ASME QSC (Quality System Certificates for Nuclear Material Organization)" from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
The ASME QSC certification is an international standard that evaluates the quality assurance systems of materials and components used in nuclear power plants and related industries. It is granted only after a thorough examination to ensure that the supplier's quality management system meets the high safety standards of the nuclear industry.
With this certification, Hyundai Steel has officially recognized that its rebar, structural steel, and plate products meet the stringent quality requirements of the global nuclear industry. The company anticipates that this will enhance trust in the steel used for the construction and maintenance of nuclear power plants while also improving the brand recognition of Hyundai Steel in the global market.
Since 2006, Hyundai Steel has supplied products for major domestic nuclear power projects, including Shin-Kori Units 1 and 2, Shin-Wolsung Units 1 and 2, and Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6. In 2011, it also secured overseas supply experience through the Barakah nuclear power project in the UAE. The company is currently involved in the construction of Shin-Hanul Units 3 and 4.
With this certification, Hyundai Steel aims to leverage its extensive experience in nuclear power projects to expand its domestic and international nuclear-related contracts. Additionally, the company plans to maintain its certification status through the enhancement of its quality management system and regular audits, establishing itself as a trusted partner in the global nuclear steel market.
“Obtaining the ASME QSC certification signifies that our nuclear products have reached world-class quality," said an official from Hyundai Steel. "We will lead the way in supplying the safest and highest-quality steel for nuclear applications through rigorous quality management and continuous technological development.”
