Chris "Jinx" Jenkins is a seasoned tech entrepreneur and financial builder, serving as Head of Operations at Pocket Network. In this exclusive interview, he shares insights into the company’s mission, principles, recent milestones, and future vision for the open API ecosystem.

Open API Network

Blockchain and cryptocurrency emerged from a desire to create decentralized, fair access systems. Yet, as these technologies have matured, commercialization often obscures this foundational ethos. Pocket Network stands out as a beacon committed to upholding these original principles. Its dedication to democratizing data access through a permissionless API network represents a key step towards decentralization and inclusivity for developers worldwide.

Pocket Network’s strategic presence in South Korea is particularly significant. Its recent listing on Upbit, South Korea’s largest crypto exchange, not only extends its global reach but also accelerates community growth and innovation in a region deeply invested in blockchain’s future. By doing so, Pocket Network preserves core blockchain values while fostering partnerships and open data access across an evolving industry landscape.--Ed.

Pocket Network and Its Principles

Q: Could you share your perspective on how the crypto industry has strayed from its founding principles of fairness and decentralization?

A: If you read Satoshi’s whitepaper, you see that blockchain was founded on the idea of a decentralized system for the people—outside governmental and regulatory systems that left regular folks vulnerable during financial crises. It was adopted and grown by cypherpunk communities who saw its potential. However, lately, we’ve seen markets turn into casino-style plays where only the originators benefit, and many former decentralization advocates partner with governments and corporations that blockchain was meant to resist. It’s disappointing to see the original ethos being sidelined in favor of greed.

Q: What inspired you to focus on building a permissionless API network, and how does it align with core blockchain ideals?

A: Pocket is founded on the belief that everyone, everywhere, should have open access to data without relying on intermediaries or risking a single point of failure. This aligns directly with blockchain’s original purpose. We feel this mission is crucial for the future of crypto, empowering decentralization and open access.

Q: How does Pocket Network differentiate itself from centralized API providers?

A: Centralized providers have two major failure points: their service can fail and disrupt data flow, and they are subject to the whims of corporate decision-makers or regulatory changes. We describe Pocket as unstoppable because its decentralized architecture is self-healing and boasts 100% uptime. The permissionless design means there’s no entity that can block your access to data, making it truly censorship-resistant.

Recent Upbit Listing and Community Growth in Korea

Q: What does the listing of POKT on South Korea’s largest exchange, Upbit, mean for Pocket Network’s global vision?

A: South Korea is a vital market, and listing on Upbit gives us access to a broad, engaged user base. We’ve been working on the largest network upgrade in Pocket’s history—this listing is a validation of our efforts and offers supporters a way to actively participate in shaping the future of our ecosystem.

Q: How has the Upbit listing impacted the Korean community? Are there specific initiatives with Korean developers or businesses?

A: Many enthusiasts were excited when POKT launched on Upbit, and they joined our community, which is still in its early stages here. We’re actively exploring ways to onboard Korean developers through collaborations with universities and industry initiatives, focusing on empowering the next generation of blockchain creators.

Q: Can you explain the significance of the KRW trading pair and how it might influence adoption?

A: The KRW pair has high liquidity in Korea, making it easier for everyday traders to participate in the network. Currently, POKT can only be traded against BTC, which adds an extra step for users. Offering a direct KRW trading option could significantly boost liquidity and broader adoption among local users.

Business Opportunities and Collaborations

Q: Which Korean industries or sectors do you see as ideal partners for Pocket Network? Are there specific blockchain, AI, or digital asset companies you’re interested in?

A: AI is a promising sector for us because AI networks need reliable, real-time data, and any access failure can be costly. Decentralized, unstoppable data is critical here. We’re also eyeing research data—many valuable datasets are locked behind paywalls or subscription systems. The pocket can facilitate open data access while ensuring that data providers are compensated. Lastly, the expansion of app and payment systems benefiting from Pocket is exciting.

Q: Which Korean industries or sectors do you see as ideal partners for Pocket Network? Are there specific blockchain, AI, or digital asset companies you’re interested in?

A: AI is a promising sector for us because AI networks rely heavily on reliable, real-time data, and any disruption can be costly for operators. Decentralized, unstoppable data feeds are essential for agentic marketplaces that need to run autonomously. Additionally, research data is a broad area where open access is increasingly important. Much valuable research remains behind paywalls or subscription services, but Pocket’s model of paying data providers for their contributions can help make more datasets publicly accessible while fairly compensating creators. Lastly, the ecosystem of apps and payment systems benefiting from Pocket is expanding rapidly. We are the first open data provider for the XRPL EVM Sidechain, which is expected to see exponential growth once they launch their mainnet, especially with Ripple’s new stablecoin enabling seamless payment settlement.

Q: How can developers, app creators, or AI enthusiasts in Korea leverage Pocket Network’s decentralized infrastructure?

A: First, I encourage everyone to join our vibrant community on Discord, where developers and enthusiasts exchange ideas and ask questions. Second, you can start testing immediately by using a free endpoint through one of our gateways. When you’re ready to go live with your application, you can implement our PATH SDK to connect directly to the protocol—no middlemen needed. This way, you can build robust, decentralized apps that benefit from uninterrupted, permissionless data access.

Broader Industry and Future Vision

Q: In your view, what is the future of decentralized data access within the crypto and blockchain space?

A: As mainstream projects increasingly partner with private companies and governments, the importance of decentralized alternatives grows. Major players often leverage control over data for their own benefit; open, decentralized data access levels the playing field for everyone—individual developers, startups, and ordinary users alike. The more centralized control consolidates, the more essential it becomes to have truly decentralized systems that uphold transparency, censorship resistance, and openness.

Q: How does Pocket Network aim to maintain its core principles of decentralization and openness as the industry evolves?

A: Our Shannon upgrade exemplifies this commitment. It’s a fully permissionless, decentralized network built from the ground up—without human intermediaries or central authority. Because of this fundamental architecture, changing or centralizing the network would require completely redesigning it, which is practically impossible. We believe this demonstrates that it’s not only feasible but also economically viable to support the original ethos of blockchain—an open, censorship-resistant, community-run infrastructure.

Q: What message do you have for Korean developers and crypto enthusiasts interested in supporting or building on decentralized infrastructure like Pocket Network?

A: Join our community on Discord, ask questions, and explore how our tools can help accelerate your projects. We’re here to support you with easy onboarding, free endpoints, and developer-friendly SDKs that enable you to integrate decentralized data seamlessly into your applications.

Personal and Company Insights

Q: What has been your personal journey into the blockchain space, and what motivates you in your role at Pocket Network?

A: I’ve been involved with blockchain since 2015 and have witnessed its evolution firsthand. Seeing blockchain’s potential to deliver real utility, protect free speech, and provide open data motivates me every day. I truly believe decentralized systems can empower individuals and reshape entire industries, and working toward that vision keeps me inspired.

Q: Are there any upcoming features, partnerships, or initiatives the community should watch out for?

A: We’re collaborating with DeveloperDAO to launch a new suite of developer tools and a gateway service designed to help builders get started easily. That should go live shortly after our latest network upgrade. Additionally, we’re excited about the launch of the XRPL EVM Sidechain mainnet, which will unlock significant growth in that part of Ripple’s ecosystem. We believe these developments will provide new opportunities for innovation and adoption.
