On June 23, The grand Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul was abuzz with reverence and celebration as dignitaries, diplomats, and guests gathered for a gala commemorating two historic milestones: the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence and the 76th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and South Korea.

The event featured heartfelt remarks from Ambassador Theresa Dizon-De Vega of the Philippines, who expressed immense gratitude and pride in the longstanding friendship between the two nations. She highlighted the deep-rooted bond that traces back to the heroism of Filipino soldiers during the Korean War, emphasizing that this alliance has matured into a strategic partnership grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and future aspirations.

Ambassador De Vega reflected on the significance of bilateral achievements, such as the implementation of the Philippines-Korea Free Trade Agreement, which has strengthened economic ties across sectors such as green energy, infrastructure, and creative industries. She also praised the ongoing defense cooperation, including recent vessel and aircraft acquisitions by the Philippines from Korea, symbolizing unwavering regional security commitments.

The ambassador’s speech also touched on people-to-people exchanges—such as the 2024 launch of the book “Dayo이민자 : Stories of Migration”—highlighting stories of resilience and integration that reinforce the cultural bonds linking the two countries. Her words conveyed a personal note as she prepares to conclude her diplomatic service in Korea in the coming months.

A key highlight was her toast honoring the enduring friendship and shared future. The evening also featured performances by the Philippine Madrigal Singers and displays of Korean and Filipino cultural cooperation, including traditional music and culinary delights.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs, His Excellency Kim Hee-sang, delivered congratulatory remarks on behalf of the Korean government. He underscored the historic ties—such as Korea's early aid during the Korean War and the Philippines’ pioneering role as Korea's first ASEAN partner—while emphasizing economic collaborations like the newly operational Free Trade Agreement and defense collaborations, including naval vessel launches.

Minister Kim praised the vibrant people-to-people exchanges, noting that over 1.5 million Koreans visited the Philippines last year, illustrating the close cultural and social bonds. He also quoted national hero Dr. José Rizal, emphasizing the importance of remembering one’s roots in shaping a bright future.

As the event drew to a close, guests saluted Ambassador De Vega for her dedication and leadership, with many acknowledging her role in elevating bilateral relations.

With the night ending on a hopeful note for increased cooperation in trade, security, and cultural exchange, this celebration once again underscored the resilience and deep friendship that bind the Philippines and Korea—two nations united in progress and shared history.
