SEOUL, KOREA — Minister of Environment Yoo Young-sook is scheduled to attend the ‘2012 OECD Environment Ministerial’ and discuss the global green growth on the theme of “Making Green Growth Deliver”. The meeting will be held at OECD headquarter, Paris, 29-30 March, 2012.
Thirty-four OECD member countries, key non-member countries including Russia, China, Brazil, Republic of South Africa, etc. and representatives of international organizations and NGOs such as UNSCD, WTO, World Bank, GGGI, etc. are expected to attend the meeting.
During the meeting, progress made in the last decade of the 21st century will be reviewed and discussions to share the strategic experience and knowledge for solving the future environmental issues will take place. Also, plans to prepare for the problems suggested in the ‘OECD Environmental Outlook to 2050’ - climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity and the health impacts of pollution – and ways to contribute to Rio+20, at the OECD level, will be discussed. Minister Yoo, as the Chair, is expected to lead the meetings which are to greatly contribute to Rio+20.
In last May, 2011, OECD had announced the ‘Green Growth Strategy’ suggesting the green growth as an alternative to overcome the environmental challenges that mankind is currently facing. It is assumed that this year’s Environment Ministerial theme, “Making Green Growth Deliver”, is determined as the main topic in the same context. OECD Environment Ministerial is a high-level meeting which has been playing a driving role in establishing the global order, since its first meeting in 1974.
Minister Yoo is also planning to explain Korea’s green growth policies including the Four Major Restoration Project and request for support on important issues such as host of IPBES secretariat through bilateral meetings with Angel Gurría, OECD Secretary-General and other key countries.
