On June 25, LS Cable & System & LS Marine Solutions announced their official participation in the ‘JAKO Project,’ a major undersea communication infrastructure initiative connecting Japan and Korea. The project involves a consortium comprising global technology giants such as Microsoft (MS), Amazon Web Services (AWS), Korean firm Dreamline, and Japanese company Arteria Networks.

The JAKO (Japan–Korea) Project aims to establish a high-speed undersea optical fiber cable linking Fukuoka, Japan, with Busan, Korea. On this day, LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solutions signed partnership agreements with the consortium, sharing details of the project’s structure, schedule, and scope of participation—marking the official launch of their involvement.

The project entails laying approximately 260 kilometers of undersea fiber optic cable to create a robust communication link between the two nations. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and conclude by 2027.

LS Cable & System will take on a pioneering role as the first in Korea's wire industry to secure an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contract for a transnational undersea communication network, overseeing the entire project. LS Marine Solutions will be responsible for the construction of the undersea cable itself.

This infrastructure development is viewed as a critical response to the surging demand for data driven by rapid growth in AI and cloud computing industries. Korea aims to position itself as a global data traffic hub through this project, establishing a foundation for its digital economy.

Through this initiative, LS Cable & System plans to strengthen its global competitiveness beyond energy infrastructure, bolstering its role in digital infrastructure. The project will also contribute to building a high-speed digital corridor connecting Northeast Asia.

Joo-wan Seob, head of LS Cable & System’s Telecommunications and Industrial Solutions Business Division, remarked, “This project is a meaningful example of a Korean company directly participating in critical infrastructure led by leading global cloud and communication technology firms.”

This undersea cable project underscores Korea's strategic move to expand its digital connectivity and reinforce its position in the rapidly evolving global data landscape.
